To contribute to the achievement of the Europe 2020 Strategy objectives, the European Structural and Investment Funds have planned to support Integrated Sustainable Urban Development, which requires a coherent and balanced Strategy with a long-term vision.

Regarding Spain, more than 1 billion euros have been earmarked for the development of these Strategies.

The Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategies (ISUDS) must be developed in cities or urban functional areas with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

The  first call, which is now closed, distributed 70% of the funds. The Official State Gazette (BOE), of 22 May 2017, published the resolution of the second call in which the remaining 30% of the funds were distributed.

Given the success of these selection procedures, the Ministry of Finance and Civil Service opened a third call with additional funds provided by the Ministry and the Autonomous Communities. Its resolution  was published on 7 May 2018.

The maximum allocation was 15 million euros for functional areas with more than 100,000 inhabitants; 10 million euros for functional areas with more than 50,000 and less than 100,000 inhabitants; and 5 million euros for functional areas with more than 20,000 and less than 50,000 inhabitants, as per the co-financing rates of the European Funds.
